Thanks to its central location, Samedan is the hub of the Rhaetian Railway and the Engadin Bus and home to the highest airport in Europe. As a central location in the Upper Engadine, you can expect a dense public transport network with which the excursion destinations around Samedan can be easily reached. Situated at 1720 metres above sea level, Samedan is also known for its beautiful, well-preserved village centre and represents a great cultural asset for the entire region. The village centre with its stately Engadine houses demonstrates postcard idyll without appearing kitschy. Highlights include the Chesa Planta with the Museum of Home Culture, the Rhaeto-Romanic library and the richly stocked cultural archive, as well as the renovated "La Tuor".
The Upper Engadine capital with its 3000 inhabitants, including the enclave of Roseggtal, covers 113.78 km2 and borders on the municipalities of Pontresina, St. Moritz, Celerina, Silvaplana, Sils, Bever, Madulain, La Punt, Bergün and, in the very south, Italy. The highest point is the Piz Bernina at 4049 m.a.s.l. and the lowest point is the Lej da Gravatscha at 1698 m.a.s.l..
In winter Samedan offers the little ones an ideal ski lift above the village with slopes for their first attempts on skis and snowboard or great toboggan rides. Experienced ski and snowboard instructors motivate your children in sporting and social activities. Thanks to well-developed rail and bus connections, the other ski areas in the region with their extensive network of pistes are quickly and easily accessible for demanding snow sports enthusiasts. There is also a direct downhill run from the Corviglia Marguns ski area back to Samedan. Snowboarding, carving, telemark and other winter sports trends can be practised side by side without hindrance and a variety of attractive performances invite you to watch. Those looking for wide, well-groomed cross-country ski trails will find ideal conditions in the Samedan landscape, while those seeking relaxation can let themselves be enchanted by the well-maintained winter hiking trails or completely abandon themselves to their inspiration on the Philosopher's Path on Muottas Muragl. The best opportunities for hockey, curling and fitness can be found in our sports centre "Promulins Arena". Snowshoe hikes and the 4.2 km long Muottas Muragl-Punt Muragl toboggan run round off our varied winter activities. After sporting activities, the mineral bath and spa in the middle of the village offers the necessary relaxation.
Excursion possibilities: What mountains. What lakes. What light! Whether on the 580km (360 miles) of hiking paths strewn over all the mountains or by mountain bike along 400km (250 miles) of fabulous trails: the Upper Engadin offers a superb network of paths and trails amidst an unspoilt Alpine landscape and the inspiring lake plateau. Three flow trails on the Corviglia guarantee a perfect flow. Equally popular among sports enthusiasts are the Upper Engadin lakes; kiting, sailing, windsurfing, stand up paddling – the possibilities are virtually endless. The expanse of the inspiring high-lying valley can be experienced in a particularly striking way on the two 18-hole golf courses in Samedan and Zuoz. And besides the wide range of sporting options, visitors can take advantage of the first-class cultural activities on offer, such as a visit to a museum or to one of the numerous art galleries in the various villages.
In winter, the ski areas of Corviglia, Corvatsch, Diavolezza and family-friendly Zuoz invite ski and snowboard enthusiasts to revel in 350 kilometres (218 miles) of the finest powder snow. Cross-country skiers will find over 220km (137 miles) of perfectly groomed trails in the Upper Engadin and the side valleys. The winter hiking paths and cross-country ski trails on the frozen Upper Engadin lakes are characterised by their light, sunshine and space amidst inspiring Alpine scenery. Those who would like to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the snow-covered forests can explore the side valleys of Val Roseg, Val Fex or Val Bever on 150 kilometres (90 miles) of winter hiking paths. Visitors who prefer to have everything in view, meanwhile, will delight in the breathtaking vistas on the panorama hiking trails high above the lakes on Muottas Muragl.
Families can bask in the Engadin sun during a ride in a horse-drawn carriage into the Val Roseg or Val Fex, or race down the mountainside into the valley on the winding, 4.2km (2.6 mile) long toboggan run on Muottas Muragl.

Location description: Samedan – the vibrant village in the Upper Engadin
Samedan is not just the political centre of the region, but also the hub of the Rhaetian Railway and home to a small international airport, the highest in Europe.
Yet in spite of its political and economic significance, Samedan has still retained its traditional Engadin heritage: in the village centre, the time-honoured rows of houses with their sgraffiti adornments are popular postcard motifs. There is a wealth of exciting highlights in store for culture lovers, too – in particular the renovated La Tuor cultural tower and the tradition-steeped Chesa Planta, accommodating a museum of living culture, the cultural archives and a Rhaeto-Romanic library.
Relaxation and recuperation can be enjoyed high above the rooftops of Samedan at the Mineral Baths & Spa, spread out over four floors. What’s more, the local mountain, the Muottas Muragl, boasts the most beautiful views of the Engadin and its lake-strewn landscape.
In summer, the La Senda nature trail above Samedan and the Water Trail down in the valley are a must-see for those thirsty for knowledge – and a fascinating experience for children, too. Modern trails delight mountain bikers, while the 18-hole golf course at the gateway to the village gets golfing enthusiasts’ pulses racing. In winter, the Survih ski area offers a children’s ski school, a cross-country ski centre and a thrilling toboggan run.
