"In Guarda, the houses were not built; they grew."
The village of Guarda is one of the best-preserved Engadine villages, engaging both architecturally and historically. The village consists almost exclusively of the typical Engadin houses with numerous sgraffiti.

Guarda is the home of Schellenursli, the main character of one of Switzerland's most famous picture books. On the Schellenursli theme trail with various adventure stations, young and young at heart can follow in the footsteps of Chalandamarz. Numerous fireplaces invite you to grill, linger, and play. By the way, the book is available at the guest information in Guarda.
The Lower Engadine climate is mild, sub-alpine with low dust, dry air, low cloud cover, and rich sunshine.

Location description: Guarda in the Lower Engadine is so beautiful a village that it was awarded the Wakker Prize. It also received the distinction «Of national importance». One of its stately houses inspired Alois Carigiet when he drew the home of Schellenursli. The Schellenursli Village, Guarda, is located at 1653 meters in the Lower Engadine on a south-facing sun terrace. Both in summer and winter, well groomed hiking paths lead from the village into the scenic countryside. The houses of the Engadine village have beautifully painted facades from the first half of the 17th century. The GPS-based «Guarda village tour» app is an interactive way to discover the village. 20 selected stations provide more information about the past and present, landscape and nature as well as the arts, crafts and catering on offer in Guarda. A special path is dedicated to Schellenursli – the main character in Alois Carigiet's childrensbook first published in 1945 (book also available in English). This path is particularly suitable for families, since it can be hiked in stages. It goes without saying that in Guarda the ancient tradition of the Chalandamarz is observed. This tradition involves chasing away the winter by the clanking sound of large cow bells. A children's ski lift, iceskating rink, toboggan run and cross-country tracks round out the winter offerings for families. The climate in the valley is mild, subalpine with low dust, dry air, low cloud cover and lots of sunshine.
