Location description: Locarno was already an urban centre in the Middle Ages. The heart of the town is the Piazza Grande, an elongated cobbled square that is considered the most beautiful square in Ticino. Piazza Grande, towards which all the streets and alleyways of the old town are orientated, is surrounded by arcades with shops, restaurants and cafés. A weekly market is held every Thursday in summer and every two weeks in winter. Open-air concerts enliven the Piazza Grande, other events take place here and every year in August the famous film festival is screened on a giant screen.
Locarno's landmark is the pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso, 150 metres above the town with a magnificent view over the town, lake and mountains. It can be reached on foot or by funicular railway (100 m from the station).
